• Many projects are (benign) dictatorships: The project initiator is in charge

• Some projects have developed formal approval mechanisms

• OSS has a unique option if a project team member is unhappy with the leadership: Forking

  • Project source code is available, so unhappy members can start their own project
  • E.g., emacs vs. xemacs; Free vs. Open vs. Net BSD
